MagTop new research center for the Polish Academy of Sciences

prof dietlThe first competition within the frames of International Research Agendas program run by the Foundation for Polish Science was won by scientists from PAS Institute of Physics. Prof. Tomasz Dietl and Prof. Tomasz Wójtowicz were granted almost 40 million PLN for research at the newly established International Center for Interfacing Magnetism and Superconductivity with Topological Matter (MagTop) in Warsaw.

PAS representatives took part in UN Global Colloquium of University Presidents on the preservation of cultural heritage

un global 18 04 2016smOn April 11–14, Prof. Jerzy Duszyński, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, participated in the eighth Global Colloquium of University Presidents at the invitation of Prof. Peter Salovey, President of Yale University. The colloquium on the theme “Preservation of Cultural Heritage: Challenges and Strategies” under the auspices of the United Nations was held in New Haven, Connecticut. Prof. Duszyński was accompanied by Prof. Roman Kozłowski, Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry (PAS).

The General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences held in Warsaw on 23 April 2015 elected as the Vicepresidents of the Academy for 2015-2018 term of office: Professor Stanisław Czuczwar corresponding member of the Academy from Division V: Medical Sciences; Professor Elżbieta Frąckowiak corresponding Member of the Academy from Division IV: Engineering Sciences; Professor Edward Nęcka ordinary member of the Academy from Division I: Humanities and Social Sciences; Professor Paweł Rowiński corresponding member of the Academy from Division III: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences.

Nomination of Professor Jerzy Duszyński for the position of the Polish Academy of Sciences President

Ewa Kopacz, Prime Minister of Poland, signed  Professor Jerzy Duszyński’s nomination to be the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences during the meeting at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister on 9 April 2015. Professor Jerzy Duszyński was previously elected to this postion by the PAS General Assembly. The ceremony was attended by Lena Kolarska-Bobińska, Minister of Science and Higher Education, and Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, Secretary of State at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and government spokesperson.

Professor Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska remembrance from „Nature”

On 9 April 2015, the journal Nature carried an obituary of the recently deceased Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska, an ordinary member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) and a retired professor at the PAS Institute of Paleobiology. This is a very rare (if not unique) case in which the lifetime achievements of a Polish researcher working in Poland have earned such prestigious international recognition.
