Description:

For more than 100 years, the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology stood for excellence in basic and translational research, in biology and biomedical sciences. Today it is a place of groundbreaking scientific research, with A+ category, and belonging to the leading scientific centres in the country. This is the place where creative people, driven by knowledge and skills, unite, collaborate, and lead change. The Institute employs over 150 scientists who combine state-of-the-art research approaches with precise tools and bioinformatics to implement ambitious, interdisciplinary research projects responding to the challenges of modern biology and medicine. The Innovative Platform of the Nencki Institute provides support for research conducted in cooperation with business, and technology transfer. The educational mission of the Institute is conducted through the multi-directional training of young scientists within the framework of its doctoral program, the Warsaw-4-PhD Doctoral School, the Interdisciplinary Tri-Bio-Chem Doctoral Studies and the International Ph.D. Program in Biomedical Research – Bio4Med. Our scientific achievements are recognized by scientific international bodies. Institute was selected by EMBL to settle here one of its International Research Agendas and by the Max Planck Society to host two Centres of Scientific Excellence. We create a stimulating environment for learning, discovery, innovation, and development.

biological and biomedical sciences

Fields of activity

Basic and Translational research in the field of:

  • Animal models of human diseases (cancer, metabolic diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, neurological diseases, cardiovascular diseases, addiction);
  • Neuroscience (neurobiology, neurophysiology, neuropsychology);
  • Cell Biology and Biochemistry (structural and molecular biology; membrane and organelles biology);

Latest achievements:

The Nencki Institute is developing very dynamically. In recent years many new research laboratories have been established here, including the prestigious International Research Agenda (MAB) financed by Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) with EMBL partnership and Two Dioscuri Centres of scientific excellence, established and coordinated by the Max Planck Society. We carry out over 180 research projects including prestigious ERC starting Grants and grants within MSCA COFUND or Human Frontier Science Program. The Nencki Institute also received the prestigious NEBI project, financed under the Intelligent Development Operational Programme (POIR 4.2), to create the National Centre for Advanced Image Analysis in Biological and Biomedical Sciences.
