Prof. Andrzej Jajszczyk elected new ERC Vice-President

Professor Andrzej Jajszczyk, President of the Kraków Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences, has been elected new Vice-President of the European Research Council (ERC). He will be in charge of ERC activities in the domains of physical and engineering sciences.

Andrzej Jajszczyk is Professor at the Department of Telecommunications at the Faculty of Computer Science, Electronics and Telecommunications of the the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, and President of the Kraków Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the years 2011-2015 he served as the Director of the National Science Center, a Polish research founding agency. Since 2017 he has been a member of the ERC Scientific Council.

From 1 January 2021, Professors Andrzej Jajszczyk and Nektarios Tavernarakis, the newly elected ERC Vice-Presidents will join Prof. Eveline Crome, who continues her mandate as ERC Vice-President responsible for social sciences and humanities. Prof. Nektarios Tavernarakis will oversee activities in the life sciences. The ERC is chaired by Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon.

The European Research Council (ERC) supports frontier research and pioneer ideas in all fields of knowledge. The ERC is composed of an independent Scientific Council, its governing body consisting of 22 outstanding researchers representing the European research community, and an Executive Agency (ERCEA), in charge of ERC strategy and grant implementation. The Scientific Council develops an annual work program, determines the level of grants financing, establishes the procedure for the evaluation of applications and appoints experts to evaluate applications. The overall ERC budget from 2014 to 2020 is more than EUR 13 billion as part of the Horizon 2020 program.
