Exactly 500 years ago, Ferdinand Magellan discovered a passage connecting the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. On this occasion, the Government of Chile established an award for outstanding researchers whose work responds to the challenges and needs of the present day.

The Polish astrophysicist has been awarded for his contribution to the development of astronomy, in particular discoveries made as part of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) project. For years, Prof. Udalski and his team have been studying structural components of the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds and searching for extrasolar planets. For this purpose, the OGLE team used the Polish telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.

Professor Udalski’s candidacy has been submitted by the Polish Academy of Sciences, Division III – Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences.
