Arctic Science Ministerial in Berlin

The European Commission and Germany co-hosted the 2nd Arctic Science Ministerial on 25-26 October 2018 in Berlin. This meeting brought together science ministers, EU representatives, researchers and representatives of international organizations and Arctic Indigenous peoples. First such meeting was initiated by the President of the United States Barack Obama and held at the White House in September 2016.

Government ministers and delegates have met to discuss the future course of Arctic research and to sign a Joint Statement on international collaboration in this area. Each of the representatives gave a short presentation on the most important achievements of a given country or organization. Presentation delivered by Polish side included, among others, information about the EDU-ARCTIC project, coordinated by the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The ministerial meeting was preceded by the Arctic Science Forum conference, which was attended by 280 people from 29 countries. The Polish delegation included: Dr. Aleksander Dańda – director of the Department of Science at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Tomasz Jałukowicz (Ministry of Science and Higher Education) and representatives of the scientific community: Prof. Jacek Jania (University of Silesia), Prof. Piotr Głowacki (Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences), Prof. Jan Marcin Węsławski (Institute of Oceanology, Polish Academy of Sciences), Prof. Krzysztof Migała (University of Wrocław), Assoc. Prof. Monika Kędra (Institute of Oceanology, Polish Academy of Sciences), Assoc. Prof. Michał Łuszczuk (UMCS in Lublin), Dr. Agata Goździk (Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences), Dr. Dariusz Ignatiuk (University of Silesia) and Dr. Przemysław Makuch (Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences).

During the conference, each of the countries could present their scientific activity in a short 5-minute presentation. Poland was represented by Prof. Jan Marcin Węsławski, director of the PAS Institute of Oceanology, who delivered presentation entitled "Consilience - unity of sciences for regional Arctic research", and spoke about increased flow of Atlantic waters to the Arctic.
