PAS researchers advising the Polish Ministry of Science concerning the COVID-19 pandemic

A special advisory team was appointed by the Minister of Science and Higher Education on 25 March. Its task? To formulate recommendations on preventing the spread of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The team of experts includes scientists from the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS).

The full name of the group appointed by the ordinance of the Minister is the “Advisory Group for the Prevention, Counteraction and Combating of COVID-19”.

The group includes:

  • Jerzy Duszyński, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences,
  • Janusz Bujnicki, Corresponding Member of the PAS, director of the Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Protein Engineering at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology,
  • Jakub Gołąb, member of the PAS Committee on Immunology and Aetiology of Human Infections,
  • Paweł Grieb, researcher at the PAS Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine,
  • Maciej Żylicz, Full Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and director of the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP).

The team is led by Prof. Maciej Żylicz. The experts will present the Minister of Science and Higher Education with the following:

  • reports on the epidemiological situation,
  • information on the latest scientific achievements and discoveries concerning the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19,
  • analyses of the needs of Polish scientists working on halting the pandemic,
  • recommendations for taking action.

Position statements will be agreed upon at conference meetings; arrangements are in place for remote meetings to be held.
