Support from PAS in the fight against the novel coronavirus

The institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences are involved at the forefront of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our researchers have been conducting testing for the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. They have also developed the prototype of an original test. Additionally, the Ventil ventilator is now in production – a single device that can be used to serve two patients at the same time. Our laboratories are providing hospitals with personal protection equipment, including facemasks, latex and nitrile gloves, plastic aprons, shoe covers and hairnets. So far our kits have been delivered to the University Hospital in Kraków and the Stefan Żeromski Specialist Hospital in Kraków. This support comes from the PAS Institute of Pharmacology.

The PAS Library in Kórnik has provided surgical masks to the Karol Jonscher University Hospital in Poznań – a donation from the curators who look after antique books in the library’s collection. The kit also included booklets on “Treasures of the Kórnik Library” for young patients.

Support for the health inspectorate

PAS institutes are sharing access to their specialist equipment, while our researchers and PhD students are conducting coronavirus tests to provide further support for the health inspectorate. Institutes involved in the campaign include:

  • the PAS Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy in Wrocław,
  • the PAS Institute of Medical Biology in Łódź,
  • the PAS Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry in Poznań.

The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry has developed the prototype of an original test for the coronavirus.

One ventilator for two patients

We have launched the manufacture of Ventil, a device was developed at the PAS Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering. With this innovative mechanism plugged in, a single ventilator can be used to serve two patients at the same time. We recently published the details of this development on the PAS website.

Developing a treatment

Scientists all over the globe are working on halting the pandemic. They are searching for a vaccine and for effective treatments. The PAS International Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Warsaw is involved in one of the research projects. More information in the article “Work on developing a treatment for COVID-19”.
