African Swine Fever - the Role of Science Advice

Polish Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) and Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs organised a workshop entitled “African Swine Fever – the Role of Science Advice”. The event took place on 6 June 2019 in Warsaw. It focused on science to science and science-government collaboration on ASF containment.

The participants discussed the need of efficient communication with different social actors, as well as the role of trust and credibility of science. The participants highlighted the necessity to train scientists in efficient communication as well as the urgency to go out of comfort zones, work on scientific consensus and build communication lines with decision-makers.

Prof. Jerzy Duszyński, PAS President and Sir Peter Gluckman, INGSA President welcomed the participants and opened the discussion. The keynote was delivered by Prof. Brad Fenwick from University of Tennessee, Senior VP for Global Strategic Alliances, Elsevier.

Prominent experts from all over the world joined their forces and shared their perspectives on combating ASF: Dr Jan Marco Mueller, IIASA, Dr Vaughan Turekian, US National Academy of Science, Dr Andrea Gavinelli and Dr Guy van den Eede, European Commission, Dr Klaus R. Depner, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, Germany, Dr Anne-Ly Veetamm, Veterinary and Food Board, Estonia and Dr Radim Plhal, Mendel University, Brno.

The Polish side was represented by: the content coordinator of the workshop Prof. Marek Konarzewski, S&T Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Romuald Zabielski, PAS Vice-President, Prof. Maciej Żylicz, Foundation for Polish Science President, Prof. Janusz Bujnicki, SAM, European Commission, Dr Krzysztof Niedziałkowski, Mammal Research Institute of the PAS and Dr Krzysztof Jażdżewski, General Veterinary Inspectorate.
