SAPEA

SAPEA (“Science Advice for Policy by European Academies”) works within the European Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) and is carried out by the five European academy networks (Academia Europaea, ALLEA, EASAC, Euro-CASE, and FEAM). The overall objective of the project is to pull together timely, independent and evidence-based scientific expertise from more than 100 European academies from over 40 countries for the highest policy level in Europe and for the wider public.

SAPEA was officially launched in Brussels on 13 December 2016 and has put in place its working structures concerning the management of science-based policy advice projects, administrative coordination, and communications. The project will initially run for four years and in that time will receive € 6 Million in EU funding.

The aim of the Madrid workshop was to strengthen the cooperation among Academies and to support individual Academies in providing evidence-based policy advice. It gave the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with colleagues from Academies all over Europe, with discussions on topics such as challenges faced by Academies when providing scientific advice for policy, working models and organizational structures or strategies used for promoting their activities. The workshop was intended to mobilise Academies in order to strengthen their contribution to SAPEA and SAM, through their membership of the European Academy Networks.

The event was attended by more than 50 participants, including prof. Günter Stock, ALLEA President, Yves Caristan, the Secretary General of Euro-CASE, as well as by high-level representatives of the European Commission and numerous delegates of the European academies.
