The Olsztyn and Bialystok Branch (OBB) of the Polish Academy of Sciences, with office in Olsztyn, was established on 11th December 2014 by the General Assembly of PAS (Resolution No 5/2014) and is the fifth territorial Academy branch. It was initiated by the PAS members from Olsztyn (Prof. R. Górecki, Prof. T. Krzymowski, Prof. A. Zięcik) and Białystok (Prof. M. Konarzewski) and supported by the governing authorities of Warmia and Mazury and Podlaskie Provinces as well as the rectors of local universities.
The Branch has currently 19 members of the Academy, including 7 Ordinary Members and 9 Corresponding Members, and also 3 Members of the Academy of Young Scientists.
The Statutory regulations passed by the PAS Presidium on 10th March 2015 (Resolution No 11/2015) oblige the Olsztyn and Białystok Branch, among others, to:

  • play initiating and integrating functions within the scientific and cultural circles of the region;
  • support scientific activities significant for the national economy and culture and disseminate their results;
  • cooperate with the governing and administrative authorities, social organisations and scientific circles and to represent them in front of the central PAS organs;
  • initiate and run cooperation- accordingly to the Branch activity area - with the countries neighbouring with Poland.

Carrying out those ambitious objectives started from organising a scientific conference combined with opening of the OBB on 18th September 2015, with participation of Piotr Grzymowicz, Mayor of Olsztyn and President of PAS.
The objective of the conference was to present the Olsztyn and Bialystok Branch of PAS to the scientific and cultural circles of the region and the representatives of the state and local governing authorities as well as to initiate cooperation aimed at further science development.
The same aim was in the publication entitled “The Olsztyn and Bialystok Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences with office in Olsztyn” published at the end of 2015.
