The Polish Academy of Sciences established its Łódź Branch on December 16, 1977. The activity of the Branch encompasses Łódź and its region as well as new, small academic and research centers in Piotrków, Sieradz and Skierniewice. The major aim of the Branch is to integrate and promote scientific activities in Łódź, the largest academic center in the area, as well as to initiate undertakings crucial for the development of the region. The Branch Council, 7 commissions and the Academic Club active within the structure of the Branch organize meetings, lectures, and discussions. Characteristically, the commissions have either interdisciplinary (e.g. the Commission on Cooperation of Chemical, Biological, and Medical Sciences) or rather specific nature (e.g. the Commission on Biomedical Materials the Commission on the Textile Industry, or the Commission on Peace Research). The Łódź Branch affiliates the Tomasz Jakub Michalski Foundation and the Foundation of Radiation Studies.
