Description :

The Institute of Genetics and Biotechnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences is one of the top research institutions in animal genetics, breeding, and biotechnology. It has a prestigious status of the National Leading Scientific Centre and, conferred by EU, Centre of Excellence in Genomics, Biotechnology and Quality of Products of Animal Origin.

There are six main research units at the Institute: Department of Biotechnology and Nutrigenomics, Department of Molecular Biology, Department of Genomics and Biodiversity, Department of Experimental Genomics, Department of Experimental Embryology, and Department of Behaviour and Animal Welfare. In addition, the Institute has at its disposal an experimental unit maintaining various species of farm and laboratory animals including a modern animals’ laboratory facility. In recent years, research teams have been created, employing eminent researchers from renowned foreign centres, like the Oxford University, the Karolinska Institute or the University of Bern. The Institute was also awarded by the European Commission with the prestigious HR Excellence in Research logo, in 2017.

Disciplines: Biotechnology, Molecular biology, Genetics, Genomics, Embryology, Behaviour and animal welfare

Fields of activity:

  • Biotechnology and nutrigenomics – modification, improvement, optimization of production and testing quality of raw and processed products of animal origin;
  • Molecular biology, genomics and biodiversity – gene expression influencing quality traits in farm animals, biomarkers, bioinformatics, iron metabolism misregulations;
  • Experimental embryology – mammalian cloning, production of transgenic and chimeric animals, in vitro production of embryos, cryoconservation and banking of cells;
  • Behaviour and animal welfare – genetics of animal behaviour, transcriptomic changes in the nervous system, improvement of different forms of olfactory detection by animals

Latest achievements:

In the years 2016-2019, the Institute carried out 32 research projects financed mainly by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In 2019 three projects were financed by the European Commission as Horizon 2020 projects and two projects were financed under the Intelligent Development Operational Program. In the same years, employees of the Institute published 270 publications in leading journals from the JCR list, including 14 publications in journals of IF>10 and 29 publications in journals of IF between 9.9 and 5.1. The average IF of the top 50 publications reached 7.627. The leading co-authorship of the employees of the IGAB PAS should also be emphasized.

The Institute is also distinguished by the wide application and patent activity.
