Stefan Banach Medal for French mathematician
President of the Polish Academy of Sciences presented the Stefan Banach Medal to Professor Michel Talagrand. The medal is awarded to mathematicians in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the development of mathematical sciences.

During the award ceremony, which took place on September 8 at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, the introduction was given by Prof. Feliks Przetycki, Chairman of the Medal Chapter. Then, the floor was taken by the laureate, who gave a lecture on the long history of chaining.
Prof. Michel Talagrand is best-known for his contributions to probability theory (especially Banach Spaces), functional analysis, and statistical mechanics. He is associated with the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Mathematical Institute in Paris. Since 1997, he has been a member of the French Academy of Sciences. Prof. Talagrand has been honored with a number of awards, the most prestigious of which is the Shaw Prize (2019).

About the medal
Stefan Banach Medal is awarded by the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences to outstanding individuals in recognition of their contribution to the development of mathematical sciences. It was established in 1992 on the centenary of the birth of Stefan Banach – a great mathematician and a leading representative of the Lviv School of Mathematics.
Famous past winners of the Stefan Banach Medal include: Kazimierz Urbanik, Nigel Kalton and Sir William T. Gowers.
