The report entitled "Emerging science, frontier technologies, and the SDGs – Perspectives from the UN system and science and technology communities" consists of several parts, the main of which are lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic (achievements and failures) and emerging science and frontier technologies. It also includs conclusions formulated in the 13th position statement of the COVID-19 Advisory Team to the PAS President at the end of March. Polish scientists call for strengthening the health system, investing in science and education, and building trust. Their guidelines were organized into the following 8 lessons:

I. Robust and independent institutions are needed

  • Lesson 1: Invest in modern health care,
  • Lesson 2: Build professional and independent expert institutions in the field of public health,
  • Lesson 3: Provide experts with access to data,
  • Lesson 4: Invest in science and education.

II. A solidary-based society is needed

  • Lesson 5: Build trust,
  • Lesson 6: Work together for the common good,
  • Lesson 7: Learn to live with the pandemic,
  • Lesson 8: Make political choices with long-term goals.

We encourage you to read the UN report and learn more about the contribution of the Polish Academy of Sciences to its creation (pages 27-29).
