IAHR Awards presented

The Vistula Boulevards in Warsaw and the Augustów Canal won the most prestigious hydrological awards in Europe. The International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) appreciated boulevards for innovative hydrological solutions and canal for its historical and enginnering importance. The awards were conferred on February 18 during the 6 IAHR Europe Congress, organized by the Polish Academy of Sciences and Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW).

The four-day IAHR Congress, which began on February 15, has just ended. The congress, originally due to be held in Warsaw, was taken online and broadcast from several separate studios, with the central studio in the Staszic Palace in Warsaw. European hydrologists honored the Vistula Boulevards in Warsaw with the "Industry Innovation Award" as an outstanding example of a modern engineering combining the needs of inhabitants with nature protection. The Augustów Canal won the "Regional Hydro-Environment Heritage Award" as a monument of hydraulic engineering.

Dr. Justyna Glusman, Director and Coordinator for Sustainable Development and Greenery of the City of Warsaw accepted the award on behalf of Rafał Trzaskowski, Mayor of Warsaw. The award for the Augustów Canal was accepted by Mirosław Korolczuk, Mayor of Augustów and Magdalena Łyżnica-Sanczenko, Director of the Department of Promotion and International Cooperation on behalf of Artur Kosicki, Marshal of the Podlaskie Voivodeship

"The Vistula Boulevards in Warsaw are a unique compromise, on a European scale, that combines the needs of the city's residents with the protection of nature and the Vistula riverbank’s landscape", said Prof. Paweł Rowiński, Vice-President of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Vice-President of the IAHR.

"The Augustów Canal is a perfect example of the technical excellence of our engineering heritage", concluded Prof. Tomasz Okruszko, Vice-Rector of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.

About the IAHR Congress

The award ceremony was an accompanying event to the 6th IAHR Europe Congress. Approximately 500 hydrologists and water professionals from 53 countries attended this year’s edition. The following issues were discussed during the congress: climate change, extreme water phenomena, natural hazards, environmental hydraulics and hydraulic engineering.
