Poland and Belarus set up a scientific council for the Białowieża Forest

The Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) have established a scientific council for the Białowieża Forest. The goal is to protect fauna and flora and lessen the impact of climate change in the forest.

President of the Polish Academy of Sciences Prof. Jerzy Duszyński and Prof. Marek Konarzewski took part in the meeting of the NASB Presidium, during which the scientific council was appointed. Their experts will prepare recommendations for the protection of biodiversity in the Białowieża Forest. The decision was announced by NASB chairman Vladimir Gusakow.

– The solutions to the typical problems facing our countries are particularly relevant. First of all, it concerns the preservation of the Białowieża Forest, the national heritage of Belarus and Poland. The effects of climate change in the Forest are equally important – said Prof. Jerzy Duszyński.
Presidents of both Academies emphasized the huge potential of bilateral cooperation in various fields of science. They also discussed on joint projects under the EU's Horizon 2020 program.

The Polish delegation visited Minsk on 20-23 August. During that stay, Porfessor Jerzy Duszyński was awarded the breastplate of V.M. Ignatovsky by NANB.
