In times of pandemic, when so much remains uncertain, it can be difficult to plan one’s next trip. For those planning to go on holiday within the country, we offer a catalog of places that inspired romantic writers and have found their place in literature from that period. Atlas Polskiego Romantyzmu. Polska-Europa-Świat  [the Altlas of Polish Romaticism. Poland-Europe-World], project prepared by our researchers from the Department of Romantic Literature, may be an inspiration for unconventional travel experiences. We will find in it a lot of entries referring to geographical areas, towns, little villages as well as larger cities located in Poland.

Altlas of Polish Romaticism

The Atlas aims to tell about the literature and culture of Polish Romanticism through the places that left their marks on romantic authors (or maybe it was the other way around). The result of the work is a volume containing about 90 entries (that take the form of essays) showing the most important places for romantic writers. Among them are the geographical areas from which they originate, phantasmatic places that fed their creative imagination, or the cities that they visited or lived in. The entries are accompanied by maps through which readers may explore, yet unexplored areas, such as connections of romanticism and spaces.

Inspiring ruins

As an encouragement, our researchers suggest to start with a map of historic ruins described in the romantic poetry from the first half of the XIX century (including works of Adam Mickiewicz, Aleksander Fredro, Zygmunt Krasiński, Seweryn Goszczyński and Juliusz Słowacki) and an entry by prof. Marta Piwińska form the PAS Institute of Literary Research. We encourage you to take a look at the Atlas of Polish Romanticism, walk in a writer’s footsteps and experience sites of great inspirations. All data is freely available.
