PAS is a leading scientific institution in Poland according to Nature Index

Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) is in the top place in the prestigious Nature Index scientific institution ranking. It is based on the institution’s publication output (number of research papers published in leading scientific journals).

The Nature Index takes into account the number and value of scientific articles published by authors from a given institution in the most influential journals devoted to natural sciences. The list includes publications from 82 science journals (including such titles as "Nature", "Science", "Physical Review A"), selected by an independent panel of scientists, leaders in their fields.

National level

In the summary of the publication achievements, from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020, the Polish Academy of Sciences (with 354 research papers) was far ahead of the best Polish universities and research units, such as the University of Warsaw (195 research papers) and the National Center for Nuclear Research (155). Further places, from 4 to 8, were taken by the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków (150), Jagiellonian University (147), Warsaw University of Technology (82), University of Wrocław (46), and the University of Adam Mickiewicz (43).

Biggest contributors

In the country outputs ranking Poland took 24th position, while the United States, China and Germany remained the unquestionable leaders of the Nature Index ranking. The Polish Academy of Sciences came in 59th place amongst European most prolific institutions. PAS scientists are also leaders in each of the thematic categories included in the overall ranking: chemistry, earth and environment sciences, physics and life sciences.

A the institutional level the global top 3 contributors to high-quality scientific research according to the Nature Index were the following research units: the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harvard University and the Max Planck Society.

The Nature Index is a database of author affiliations and institutional relationships. It tracks contributions to scientific articles published in 82 high-quality natural science journals.

The Nature Index provides several metrics to track research output and collaboration at the institutional, national and regional level. These include article count, fractional count, mulitilateral and bilateral collaboration scores.

The Index is updated monthly and a 12-month rolling window (1 April 2019 – 31 March 2020). Collected data is openly available at www.natureindex.com.
