Collecting data on the European COVID-19 Data Platform

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) has just launched an IT platform for collecting coronavirus data. The PAS Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center will cooperate with EMBL as a national data hub.

The data platform will provide a shared space where researchers and public health agencies can easily store and share relevant datasets dedicated to coronavirus pandemic. The SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs will be built on EMBL-EBI infrastructure. The national institutions responsible for collecting research data will generate viral sequences at national and regional levels.

This initiative is coordinated by the EMBL branch in Hinxton (UK) – European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). The national SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs will be established in interested EMBL Member States.

Minister of Science and Higher Education entrusted the role of a national COVID-19 data hub to the PAS Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, within which the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) operates – one of the leading data storage and data processing centers in Poland using artificial intelligence methods and advanced visualization.

PSNC will collect data from Polish research and health institutions. The goal of this collaboration is to better understand the biology, epidemiology, transmission, and evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and to find effective ways to slow down the epidemic. This initiative will also involve cooperation with existing networks and databases, including the database maintained by World Health Organization (WHO).
