Research station of the Nencki Institute in Mikołajki A new beginning

For the 100th anniversary of the Nencki Institute, the Research Station in Mikołajki gained not only a new name but also initiated a new tradition – the Tree Avenue of the Nencki Institute was launched. Three trees were planted for a good start, including plane tree, Ambrose and tulip tree.

On 22nd of September, at the Research Station of the Nencki Institute in Mikołajki, a scientific session took place, regarding the present activity of the Station, along with the assignment of a new name. Director of the Institute, Prof. Agnieszka Dobrzyń unveiled a plaque with the new name of the Station and planted a commemorative tree on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Nencki Institute. At the Station, the Tree Avenue of the Nencki Institute was also officially launched – the first tree was planted by prof. Adam Szewczyk, whose efforts led to repossession of the Station by the Nencki Institute; the second tree was planted by prof. Lech Wojtczak – an outstanding biochemist and distinguished employee of the Institute.

During the ceremony, Prof. Agnieszka Dobrzyń, together with Dr. Tomasz Janecki, head of the Research Station, in recognition for many years of cooperation and involvement in the development of the Station, handed the Medals of the 100th Anniversary of the Nencki Institute. Medals were awarded to: Prof. Ryszard Chróst (Department of Ecology of Microorganisms and Environmental Biotechnology, University of Warsaw); Piotr Jakubowski (Mayor of Mikołajki); Prof. Marek Konarzewski (Institute of Biology, Department of Animal Ecology); Dr. Lech Kufel, Assoc. Prof. (University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Siedlce);  Kinga Nowak, MSc. (Institute of Dendrology, PAS); Prof. Joanna Pijanowska (Department of Hydrobiology, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw); Dr. Waldemar Siuda (Department of Ecology of Microorganisms and Environmental Biotechnology, University of Warsaw); Krzysztof Wittbrodt, MSc.  (Masurian Landscape Park).

The Hydrobiological Station of the Nencki Institute in Mikołajki was established in 1951. on the initiative of Jan Dembowski. The first Head of the Station was Andrzej Szczepański. In the 1960s, the Polish Academy of Sciences transferred the station to the Department of Ecology, then to the Institute of Ecology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It returned to the Nencki Institute in 2014.

The Research Station of the Nencki Institute is located in the center of the Great Masurian Lakes system, on the high western shore of Mikołajskie Lake. It offers access to laboratory equipment, as well as providing accommodation to year-round guest rooms. The station also acts as a teaching center for students/PhD students who are conducting field training exercises and student internships here. Education at the Station includes workshops, trainings, lessons, shows, festivals,  thematic days, etc., being addressed to the local community, primary  and secondary school students.
