Sir Tim Hunt’s visit in Warsaw

On 13-16 June 2018 the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) hosted prof. Tim Hunt, who received the Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine in 2001. This famous British biochemist made a discovery that concerns the cyclin mechanism of cell division, shedding light on the growth of tumours in humans.

The first meeting with prof. Hunt took place on 14 June in the Copernicus Science Centre (CSC) and it was open to the wide audience. The event was organized by the Polish Academy of Sciences in the cooperation with the PAS Young Academy and CSC. Prof. Hunt delivered a lecture “How to succeed in science?”, sharing his views on  the great scientific discoveries and inspiring his younger colleagues to face demanding scientific challenges. He also revealed some practical hints how to increase their chances for success in research. During the second part of the event the representatives of the PAS Young Academy, Dr Anna Ajduk and prof. Wojciech Fendler chaired a discussion on openness in science and passion for scientific research. Young researchers were asking i.a. about the inspiration for scientific work, the pathways of scientific careers, as well as research arcana of the Nobel Prize laureate.

On Friday, 15 June prof. Hunt visited the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the PAS, where he gave a lecture entitled "A crooked path in science: stumbling on the secret of cell division". The guest took also part in the annual Scientific Picnic of the Nencki Institute.
