PAS Institute of Medical Biology engaged in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic

Due to COVID-19 pandemic and high demand for testing at the end of March a new laboratory was opened in Łodź. To facilitate the launch of the new lab our institute provided the necessary equipment and helped develop diagnostic and safety procedures. Additionally, PAS researchers are carrying SARS-CoV-2 testing.

The laboratory was established at the Clinical and Didactic Center of the Medical University in Łódź. It was created at an unusual pace (just 5 days) thanks to the cooperation of the local scientific community, including:

  • PAS Institute of Medical Biology,
    • Medical University of Łódź,
    • Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection at the University of Lodz,
    • Proteon Pharmaceuticals S.A.,
    • BioNanoPark.

The laboratory started operating on March 23. An experienced team of virologists, microbiologists, geneticists, and specialists in molecular biology examines samples collected from patients suspected of having SARS-CoV-2 infection. At the moment the lab can run up to 200 coronavirus tests per day, but ultimately the number of tests will be expanded to 400 tests a day.

The role of the Institute

The PAS Institute of Medical Biology provided access to its specialized equipment. It also participated in the development of diagnostic and safety procedures. In addition, our researchers joined in diagnostics. Currently, 10 employees of the institute work in shifts processing the COVID-19 tests. They are joined by the other.

Rapid testing is the key to coronavirus pandemic

In the first week of the lab operation, nearly 1,200 samples were laboratory-processed. The rapid  and mass testing for coronavirus is now the key strategy as early patient detection with accurate tests may prevent the virus from spreading.

The laboratory supports existing diagnostic units in Łódź. It receives samples after they are collected at the hospitals for infectious diseases in Łódź and Zgierz. The lab does not take samples for testing directly from patients.

If you have COVID-19 symptoms or assume that you have novel coronavirus infection, please stay at home and self-isolate. If you require medical attention, contact the National Sanitary Inspectorate.
